NUMBER OF THE DAY

So many individual trips are expected by Chinese authorities during the eight-day Golden Week holiday — an increase of 3.2% from last year.

🚗 Roads under pressure: 1.87 billion car trips (80% of all travel). On peak days more than 70 million vehicles are expected on highways, including 14 million EVs. Railways will carry 219 million passengers with 13,000 trains running daily.

📅 Record day ahead: On October 1, as many as 340 million people could be on the move — surpassing the previous record of 339 million set during this year’s Spring Festival. Popular destinations include Shanghai, Chengdu, Beijing as well as Japan and Southeast Asia.

Watch: China’s Golden Week highlights the sheer scale of the country. With 2.36 billion trips in just eight days, that’s nearly three times the population of the EU on the move. Authorities warn of EV charging bottlenecks and traffic gridlock.
